Shopify App Widgets Not Showing After a Theme Update? How to Fix Them
Shopify app widgets can disappear after a theme change or update, even when the storefront loads normally. Learn how to restore missing app embeds, review blocks, chat widgets, and other third-party elements.
Shopify app widgets can disappear after you switch themes, update a theme, or change an app's configuration. Product reviews, chat buttons, size guides, and other storefront elements may stop appearing even though the rest of the store loads normally.
The first things to check are the published theme, app embeds, app blocks, and the affected page template. If those settings are correct, investigate JavaScript errors, third-party resources, and app compatibility.
A missing widget does not always mean the app is broken. Sometimes the app is installed and working, but its storefront component is disabled, placed on a different template, or prevented from loading.
Why Shopify app widgets disappear after theme changes
Shopify apps can integrate with storefront themes through app blocks, app embeds, or custom theme code.
These methods work differently:
- App blocks place functionality inside a specific section or page template. Examples include product reviews, size charts, and recommendation widgets.
- App embeds add functionality through theme-level settings. Examples include floating chat buttons and some tracking or integration scripts.
- Custom theme code allows certain apps to load through scripts or other changes made directly to theme files.
When you publish a different theme, app integrations may need to be activated or configured again. Shopify specifically warns that apps used with a previous published theme might not be active in the new one.
Updating an existing theme is different. Shopify's standard theme update process normally copies customizations made through the theme editor, including app embed and app extension settings. However, incompatible applications, conflicting code changes, or configuration problems can still cause functionality to disappear.
Other possible causes include:
- An app block missing from the relevant page template.
- A disabled or hidden section.
- JavaScript errors preventing initialization.
- Failed requests to an external app provider.
- App visibility rules that exclude certain products or visitors.
- Widgets that load only after scrolling or another user action.
Start with the simplest configuration checks before modifying theme code.
1. Confirm which Shopify theme is published
Before changing app settings, verify that you are editing the theme customers actually see.
In Shopify Admin:
- Open Online Store and go to your themes.
- Identify the currently published theme.
- Check whether a different theme was recently published or an updated version was installed.
- Open the affected storefront page on your public domain.
- Compare its behavior with the relevant theme preview, if available.
Only the published theme is shown to regular storefront visitors. An app widget working in a draft theme preview does not prove that it is active on the live storefront.
Also determine whether the issue affects every page or only certain products, collections, or templates.
For example, if reviews appear on one product page but not another, the problem might be related to their assigned templates rather than the app installation itself.
2. Check whether the app embed is enabled
A disabled app embed is one of the first things to investigate when a floating widget or other app-provided functionality disappears.
To check:
- In Shopify Admin, open Online Store.
- Find the theme you want to inspect and click Edit theme.
- Open App embeds in the theme editor.
- Find the relevant installed application.
- Check whether its embed is enabled.
- If it should be active, enable it and click Save.
- Preview the affected page and check the public storefront if the change is on the published theme.
Depending on the application, you may also need to review its own settings.
Important: Shopify can support different app embed configurations for different Markets. If the widget appears in one region but not another, check the selected Market in the theme editor before changing the store-default configuration.
Not every app uses an app embed. If the application is missing from this list, determine whether it uses an app block or another integration method.
For Shopify's official instructions, see Extend your theme with apps.
3. Restore missing app blocks on the correct template
If product reviews, sizing information, or another inline widget disappears, check its placement in the theme editor.
App blocks are attached to specific sections or page templates. An installed app does not automatically guarantee that its block appears on every page.
To investigate:
- Open the relevant theme in Shopify's theme editor.
- Navigate to the affected page type, such as a product page.
- Check which template the page uses.
- Examine the sections and blocks in that template.
- Look for the expected app block and confirm that it is not hidden.
- If the block is missing, choose Add block and find the application under Apps, where supported.
- If appropriate, use Add section to add an app section to the template.
- Save the change and test the affected page.
Some sections and themes do not support every app block. Compatibility depends on the theme architecture and the application.
If a block is unavailable, check the app's installation instructions and theme compatibility before attempting custom code changes.
Example: A review widget may be present on the default product template but missing from an alternative product template used for a particular collection of products.
Fixing the default template alone would not resolve that situation.
4. Review app settings and theme compatibility
If the embed or block is correctly configured but the widget still does not appear, inspect the application itself.
Check whether:
- The application is still installed and properly configured.
- The relevant widget is enabled inside the app.
- Its display rules include the affected products, collections, or pages.
- The app requires an additional setup or activation step.
- The application supports the currently published theme.
- A recent app update changed its installation or configuration requirements.
Some apps also depend on code previously added to the theme.
If you recently updated the theme, review whether customized code was transferred successfully. Shopify's theme update workflow identifies cases where code edits could not be included.
Do not copy old scripts into a live theme without checking the app provider's current instructions. Duplicated or outdated installation code can create additional problems.
Whenever possible, test changes in a draft or duplicate theme before publishing them.
5. Look for JavaScript errors and failed resources
A widget can be enabled correctly and still fail to render because the browser cannot initialize it.
Open the affected storefront page and use your browser's Developer Tools.
Check the Console
- Open the Console panel.
- Reload the page.
- Look for JavaScript errors related to the missing widget or its provider.
- Check whether the error appeared after a theme or app change.
- Compare the result with a page where the widget still works.
A JavaScript error is a diagnostic clue, not automatic proof of the root cause.
Check the Network panel
Open Network, reload the page, and inspect requests associated with the application.
Look for:
- Failed JavaScript or stylesheet requests.
- HTTP errors from the app provider.
- Requests blocked by browser security policies or extensions.
- Resources that never load or complete unexpectedly.
- Differences between working and affected pages.
If the expected third-party script is not requested at all, the integration may not be enabled or injected on that page.
If the script loads but the widget remains empty, the problem may involve initialization, configuration, or data returned by the application.
Avoid assuming that every failed network request is responsible for the missing widget. Confirm that the resource belongs to the affected functionality.
6. Check lazy loading, mobile behavior, and Shopify Markets
Some widgets do not appear immediately when the page finishes loading.
For example, reviews near the bottom of a product page may load only when the visitor scrolls toward them.
Before treating a widget as missing:
- Scroll to the section where it should appear.
- Allow enough time for delayed content to load.
- Check whether the actual widget content appears, not just an empty container.
- Repeat the test with a mobile viewport.
- Compare a normal browser session with a private session, where appropriate.
- Check relevant markets, languages, and app visibility conditions.
A widget might also depend on cookie consent, customer status, product eligibility, or other application-specific conditions.
Be careful when comparing regions or sessions: a difference can be expected behavior rather than a malfunction.
Example: If a review section is present but shows no reviews, check whether the product actually has published reviews before assuming the widget failed.
7. Verify that the widget is working again
After applying a fix, do not stop at confirming that the app appears in the theme editor.
Test the actual customer-facing behavior.
For a review widget, verify that the expected reviews appear on a product with published reviews.
For a size guide, open the guide and confirm that its content is visible.
For a chat widget, check that the launcher opens the intended interface without generating relevant errors.
Complete these checks:
- Test the published storefront, not only the theme preview.
- Open a fresh browser session to avoid relying on cached page state.
- Check at least one affected page and one comparable working page.
- Verify the relevant product or page templates.
- Check desktop and mobile behavior.
- Confirm that the widget displays meaningful content or performs its intended action.
- Recheck relevant Console and Network errors.
If the problem persists, collect the affected URL, theme version, app name, browser errors, and steps to reproduce it before contacting the app developer or theme support team.
Monitor important Shopify widgets with GO4
A storefront can remain accessible while an important third-party widget stops working. Regular uptime checks alone may not reveal the problem.
GO4 Monitoring provides complementary ways to investigate and monitor these situations.
Browser Lab can open a selected page in a controlled browser and check whether an expected DOM element exists after JavaScript loads.
For a lazy-loaded review widget, you can configure a DOM assertion, scroll toward the review section, wait for the content to load, and check for an element representing an actual review rather than only an empty wrapper.
Choose a representative product that should have visible reviews. A stable, specific selector helps reduce false warnings.
External Radar monitors third-party resources across selected storefront pages. It helps identify problematic or slow providers and investigate changes in external dependencies, including app scripts and widgets.
A missing or failed external resource is a reason to investigate, not definitive proof that the visible widget is broken.
JS Agent, when installed and configured, can provide passive signals from real browser visits. On supported plans, Custom DOM assertions can evaluate whether expected elements are present in relevant browser events.
These real-visitor signals depend on actual traffic, sampling, and the configured checks. They do not replace controlled browser tests.
For setup guidance, see the GO4 documentation.
Monitoring helps detect potential regressions after theme and app changes, but it does not automatically repair the underlying issue.
Final checklist
Before considering the problem resolved, confirm that:
- You identified the correct published theme.
- The required app embed is enabled where applicable.
- The app block is present on the correct page template.
- The application's own display settings are correct.
- No relevant JavaScript or resource-loading errors remain.
- Delayed, mobile, and market-specific behavior has been tested where relevant.
- The widget works on the public storefront, not only in a preview.
When a Shopify app widget disappears, start with theme configuration and block placement, then investigate application settings and browser behavior.
The most reliable fix is one that restores the expected customer experience and can be verified again after future storefront changes.
